About the App
Tidybox AI is a native macOS app that uses Apple Intelligence to organize your files. Point it at any folder, and it will scan every file, extract content using OCR and metadata analysis, then suggest a clean folder structure with better file names — all powered by on-device AI.
Getting Started
- Download Tidybox AI from the Mac App Store
- Launch the app and select a folder to organize (e.g. Downloads, Desktop)
- Wait for the scan and AI analysis to complete
- Review the suggested organization in the before/after tree view
- Check or uncheck individual files to customize the plan
- Click Execute to apply the changes

Folder Scanning
- Pick any folder: Use the folder picker to select any directory on your Mac
- Scan depth: Configure how many levels deep to scan in Settings
- File types: All common file types are supported — PDFs, images, documents, archives, and more
Content Analysis
- PDF text: Extracts text content from PDF documents
- OCR: Reads text from images and screenshots using Apple Vision
- Photo metadata: Reads EXIF data including dates, camera info, and GPS
- Spotlight metadata: Uses macOS Spotlight to gather additional file information
AI Organization
- Smart categorization: Groups files into meaningful folders based on content
- Better names: Suggests descriptive file names based on what the file contains
- Rule-based fallback: Known file types (screenshots, camera photos, archives) are handled even without AI
Review and Execute
- Before/after view: See exactly what will change before anything moves
- Per-file checkboxes: Accept or reject changes for individual files
- Full undo: Reverse any operation with one click
- Empty folder cleanup: Automatically removes folders left empty after moves
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Tidybox AI need an internet connection?
A: No. All processing happens on-device using Apple's Foundation Models. No internet connection is required.
Q: Will the app move my files without asking?
A: Never. Tidybox AI always shows you a full review of proposed changes before anything is moved. You can accept or reject changes per file.
Q: Can I undo the changes?
A: Yes. Every operation is logged and fully reversible. Open the History view to undo any previous organization run.
Q: What Mac do I need?
A: Tidybox AI requires macOS 26.0 (Tahoe) or later on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later). The on-device AI features require Apple Silicon.
Q: Is my data sent anywhere?
A: No. Your files are analyzed entirely on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded or transmitted. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Q: What happens if the AI is unavailable?
A: The app falls back to rule-based classification for known file types like screenshots, camera photos, and archives. The result may be less nuanced but still useful.
Troubleshooting
App can't access my folder
Tidybox AI uses macOS App Sandbox with security-scoped bookmarks. You need to explicitly select a folder using the folder picker. If access stops working, try re-selecting the folder from the app.
AI organization seems limited
The on-device AI has a smaller context window than cloud models. For best results, organize folders with fewer than 100 files at a time. The app processes files in batches automatically.
Scan is slow on large folders
Content extraction (especially OCR on images) can take time on large folders. The app processes up to 8 files concurrently. Consider scanning subfolders individually for very large directories.
